Learn to Swim at Central Broward Regional Park

Summer is near and swimming season is here. Preregistration begins Saturday, May 5 for the Learn To Swim Program, for ages 2 through 10. The Learn To Swim Program will be held at Tropical Splash Water Park inside Central Broward Regional Park. Classes begin Monday, June 11 through Monday, August 16, with a total of five sessions (a session consists of eight lessons). The 30-minute classes are offered Mondays through Thursdays, and six different swimming courses, from preschool through the advanced level. Children at every level will have an opportunity to learn how to swim, or improve their swimming skills.

Vivica A. Fox at Lauderhill YMCA’s Girls Empowerment Day

The Lauderhill Community YMCA Center hosted their inaugural Girls Empowerment Day on Friday, March 30, featuring actress and producer Vivica A. Fox. It was an exciting day for the 35 girls who participated;

activities included various workshops on body image, teen yoga, and sessions on celebrating your internal and external beauty. A highlight for many of the girls came from Ms. Fox who shared words of inspiration and encouragement. Commissioner Holness spoke briefly to the girls on how they can empower themselves and their communities. Also taking in the festivities and lending their support to the event were Lauderhill Commissioners M. Margaret Bates and Commissioner Howard Berger.


Get Free Tax Return Preparation Assistance

United Way Mobile Resource CenterThe United Way of Broward County will send its Mobile Resource Center (RV) to differing locations throughout Broward County to help lower-income families (families who earn less than $49,078) fill out their federal tax returns free of charge. The Mobile Resource Center will be stationed at a variety of Broward County locations until April 14, 2012.

Hispanic Unity will provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers aboard the Mobile Resource Center who will provide residents with information on what the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) is, how to qualify, and how to claim these credits.

Additional Support Available for Low-Income Households

Broward County’s Family Success Administration Division has received an increase in funding to provide additional case management and support services for low-income households in Broward County. 

There are five Family Success Centers located throughout Broward County, including the Edgar P. Mills Multi-Purpose Center located in District 9:

The five Family Success Centers offer a wide range of services which include: rent/mortgage and utility assistance, life skills training, health services and much more.

WorkForce One Looking for Youth to Participate in Program

Earn and Learn Flyer...If you know of an out of school youth (16-21) who is looking to go back to school or looking for work, WorkForce One Employment Solutions may be their solution. In addition to adults, WorkForce One Employment Solutions provides services to Broward County’s youth including, job coaching, life skills training, summer youth employment. The current Earn and Learn program is looking for youth who are 16-21 years of age, in the Earn and Learn program recipients can receive paid on-the-job- training and money to go back to school.
